Tiki House

This custom-built house boasted charm and character from the onset. Even the windows had been artisan-built, using hand-forged nails instead of screws at every joint. Our mission was to lovingly update the architecture and design while maintaining this level of handmade authenticity and character throughout.

  • Every material in this home tells a story. Ebony fireplace bricks are hand-chiseled from local lava stone. Koa wood, found only in Hawaii, creates a warm, rich backdrop throughout the home. Because this beautiful tree is protected, we had to wait patiently for timber from naturally-fallen trees. Then, local craftsmen transformed raw material into custom cabinetry and millwork, down to the hand-chiseled pulls and hand carved staircase.

Over 3 years, we meticulously sourced vintage and handmade pieces from around the islands: Wall sconces from the 20s. An iconic vintage poster — one of 3 just in the world. Antique perfume bottles and framed pieces of local weavings.

From bowls and board games to furnishings and fixtures, every detail was thoughtfully curated as an ode to the islands.

No inch of this property was off-limits. We thoughtfully designed the grounds and gardens, connecting the home to its surroundings while maximizing opportunities for outdoor living. Three pavilions frame a custom pool, with ample room for lounging in the sun. The grassy areas beyond are thoughtfully appointed for every activity: a fire pit for evening hangouts, a hammock for lazy days, plus dining tables and benches overlooking the oceanside cliffs, perfect for watching the dolphins while sipping on morning coffee.

All in all, this project is a museum piece. An ode to craftsmanship and culture and the land it inhabits, with every design decision working together to achieve the delicate balance of history and modern livability. Over this years-long project, our team learned so much about the islands and her people, falling deeply in love with both along the way.
